Sport is loved and played all over the world, but there is no country that loves to play sport as much as Australia. Sport in Sydney, New South Wales plays an important part of the culture of the state. There are a lot of different sports loved by the people of Sydney including Rugby Union, AFL, Cricket, Soccer, Basketball and Netball, with Rugby League being the city’s most popular.

 Rugby League

Rugby League is by far the most popular and traditional Sydney sport. The competition of which Rugby League fans watch is the National Rugby League (NRL) which first started in 1908 and consists of sixteen teams from Victoria, A.C.T, New South Wales, Queensland and New Zealand. Sydney is home to nine of the sixteen NRL Teams from all over the city, with a tenth team located in Newcastle.

 Rugby Union

Rugby Union is also a popular sport in Sydney as it has a long history in the city dating back to 1869. Super Rugby is the national Rugby competition and is played all over Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, with Sydney making up one of the teams, the New South Wales Waratahs. Rugby Union is highly regarded as an upper class game and is played in many of Sydney’s top private schools.

 Cricket

An Australian past time, cricket is popular in all parts of the country, especially Sydney. The New South Wales Blues are the most successful domestic cricket team in Australia having won the competition forty four times. A popular national competition is the Big Bash League which is held in the summer, with Sydney boasting two of the eight teams.

 Soccer

Soccer has been played in Sydney from the late 1800’s. Like Rugby League, Sydney has had a long and strong tradition in soccer. The national soccer league is known as the A-League in which the Sydney team, Sydney FC compete in. The Sydney based soccer club has attracted more than 10,000 members and can reach up to 40,000 spectators at each game.

  Australian Rules Football

Australian Rules Football is rapidly becoming one of Sydney’s favourite sports. The Australian Rules Football national competition is known as the AFL in which two Sydney teams compete in, the Sydney Swans and the Greater Western Sydney Giants. The GWS Giants are the competitions most recent team, joining in 2012. The Sydney Swans most recent success comes in 2005, when they won the Grand Final.

  Basketball

Basketball is played all over Australia, with Sydney being a very popular basketball destination. Australia’s competition is called the National Basketball League (NBL) which features two Sydney based teams, the Sydney Kings and the Wollongong Hawks. The Kings are the most successful out of the two, winning three consecutive titles in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

  Netball

The ANZ Championship is the official national competition featuring ten different teams from all over Australia and New Zealand. One of the most successful sides in the ANZ Championship are the Sydney based New South Wales Swifts, who won the inaugural title in 2008. Prior to the ANZ Championship, the national competition was known as the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, in which the Sydney Swifts won four titles, being the second most successful team.
